A roof assessment, not a panel count
Ask for a layout that accounts for roof condition, orientation, seasonal shade and wind exposure. A hilltop section and a sheltered valley home need different design checks. Coastal fixings may also need a corrosion assessment. NIWA's SolarView provides a useful way to understand location-specific solar exposure, but a property survey still matters. A good recommendation explains both the useful roof space and the reasons any part is excluded.
A connection plan for your address
Your network matters as much as your roof. Wellington Electricity, Electra and Powerco have different application requirements. Before accepting a quote, check who will prepare the distributed-generation application, confirm export settings and arrange the required electrical documents. The EWRB explains what certification to expect from your electrical worker. Make these steps part of the written scope rather than assuming someone else has handled them.
Energy you can actually use
Start with your household's daily pattern, not a promise of universal savings. Daytime loads can use solar directly; a battery can move some energy into the evening. A backup system needs an explicit design for the circuits it will supply. Ask for seasonal generation assumptions and a clear explanation of imports, exports and storage. Compare like-for-like scopes and check lender terms directly if using a green home loan.

No package to pick before you know the facts. Start with your suburb, your plans and the way you use power.
Tell us about your property and what you would like to achieve with solar or battery storage.

Keep more of your solar for later.
A battery can store daytime generation for the evening. Backup is a separate design decision: the right equipment and circuits need to be included from the start.

From first question
to a clear plan.
- Tell us about your property. Choose a service and share your suburb.
- Understand the site. Roof, shade, usage and network requirements shape the proposal.
- Compare the written scope. Confirm equipment, approvals, certification and handover before committing.
Your questions, answered.
Does solar work in Wellington's weather?
Yes, panels can generate in diffuse daylight, although output drops on cloudy days and during shorter winter days. Wind exposure, roof orientation and shading need to be assessed at the property. An annual generation estimate should account for these factors rather than relying on one sunny day.
Will solar keep the power on during an outage?
Ordinary grid-connected solar shuts down during a grid outage. Backup needs a compatible inverter and battery system designed to isolate safely from the network and supply selected circuits. Ask which appliances are covered, their starting loads and the expected runtime.
Do I need a battery from day one?
Not necessarily. Start with when your home uses electricity. Daytime appliances, hot-water control or EV charging can use solar directly. A battery may help shift energy into the evening or provide selected backup, but it should solve a specific need.
Who approves the grid connection?
Your lines company approves distributed generation for the address. Wellington Electricity covers Wellington, Porirua and the Hutt Valley; Electra covers Kāpiti; Powerco serves Wairarapa. The installer should confirm the network, application requirements and export conditions before installation.
How much roof space do I need?
There is no one-size answer. Roof dimensions, direction, pitch, shade, access and the chosen panels determine the layout. Roof condition and mounting requirements matter too. An assessment should explain the useful area rather than simply filling every available space.
What should my solar quote include?
Look for a property-specific panel layout, a generation estimate, equipment details, connection requirements and a clear written scope. Your quote should explain electrical certification, equipment warranties, installation timing and any battery or backup features included.
